Annual Spring Day Out

On Saturday 2 November a group of "Woodies" convened for their Annual Spring Day Out.

​First on the itinerary was a visit to the showroom of artist John Ecuyer. John's woodworking journey began in the late 1980's and continues at Matakohe where his home, workshop and gallery are now located.

The Woodies then made their way to the historic Kauri Museum, also in Matakohe. This vast and impressive museum is a must-see if you are exploring the Kaipara region. The dedicated museum staff and volunteers painstakingly preserve the toil and hardship endured by early pioneers settling in NZ's rugged landscape.

After a spot of lunch at a local cafe, the next destination was Dargaville, where Master Wood Turner Rick Taylor, a founding member of the NW&WC, welcomed us into his gallery and workshop. He demo'd a new lathe tool attachment he'd recently acquired, and discussed some of his custom-made lathe tools. You can see Rick's amazing work on his website, thewoodturnersstudio.co.nz/.

Before we headed off, Rick presented the club with a commemorative photo album of the recent dinner held to celebrate the club's 40th anniversary. A great piece of memorabilia and a thoughtful gift.

All in all it was a great day made even better with some stunning winterless North weather!
