Multi Project Demo Night

7/11/2019

This week's club night was a bit of everything to cater to just about everyone.

If you are new to wood turning and unsure what type of projects might appeal to you, then this club night format is just the ticket!

With all of our six lathes spinning simultaneously, attendees are able to move about freely to watch one, some, or all of the demonstrations.

Here was last Tuesday's lineup:
  1. Shane Hewitt was stationed at our new Nova Saturn DVR lathe. He was demonstrating how to sand and finish wood bowls with resin inlays. If you watch wood turning videos on Youtube, you'll be well familiar with the trend of combining resin with wood on the lathe.
  2. Bob Langford was turning pens. This is very fine work and the end results are simply stunning. Hand turned pens make brilliant personal gifts, as well as being ideally-sized for selling to the tourist market.
  3. Jim Maloney showed how to turn a pepper grinder on the lathe. Why spend big money on a generic store-bought grinder when you can make your very own? All you need is the grinding mechanism and some know-how!
  4. Hayden Bourke worked on a multi-center project. This involves mounting the wood in the tailstock in several off-center positions, resulting in the final piece having a spiral effect. Very unique and quite beautiful.
  5. Simon Peacey made kiwi eggs. The skill in turning eggs lies in achieving smooth flowing curves and a realistic shape - easier said than done!
  6. Sid Ware was downsizing - he detailed how to replicate an itsy bitsy miniature vase and saucer, along with some impossibly-dainty tulips. A steady hand and the ability to hold your mouth right are two requisite skills for miniature turning.

Stay tuned for the video footage of these demos, coming to this blog soon.
