Our Club was blessed to be able to host world renown Irish turner Glenn Lucas to demonstrate his skills to all those that came along. Easily one of the very best demonstrations we have had in our Club for a long time. Not only were his tool skills great to watch and learn from but his manner of delivery made listening and learning great. Lots of little titbits of humour and items of interest were thrown in along the way.
The committee opted for the full bag of tricks, meaning Glenn did 3 demos during two sessions, 2 to 5pm, then a break for a barbecued sausage and salad dinner followed by another 6 to 8pm. During this time Glenn turned out a traditional Irish dinner plate, followed by a Viking bowl, and then after the dinner break he produced a square platter. All were finished down to a ready to sand stage within that time frame. The great thing was that he managed to entertain us as well as produce 3 items.
Quite likely some members were reluctant to pay the full $35 for the whole event, but such is the cost of bringing such quality expertise to this part of the world. A raffle was also run, the 3 winners having the choice of which of the 3 pieces Glenn had made. Three happy people ! You should also know that the Club subsidised the cost for your benefit as well.
Thanks should go to Jim who ferried Glenn between Auckland and Whangarei, and to Alison (who else but an Irish women!) for hosting him overnight and showing him some of our fair city.
GREAT STUFF.
