A.G.M. of the National Association of Woodworkers of N.Z.

By Anon

Our Club were proud to host the annual event this year for the first time in our history. As well as those from the national committee present we had an excellent attendance of our Club members also. During the day we were spoilt to have 3 excellent visiting demonstrators show us some of their particular skills …… great learning stuff.

First up was Neil Joynt from the Puraruru Club. Like many turners Neil has made a specialty of one particular segment of the wider turning world, in this case balls, orbs, or spheres as he calls them.

Not only are they perfectly round but can be hollow (as in boxes), and highly decorated with colour and pyrography.

I was very keen to learn more about the making of spheres, and I know there are many ways of going about it, very often with a jig of some sort or other.

In Neil’s case he had quite elaborate manufactured equipment, putting his way out of reach of many of us. But the result was perfect, faultless. I think I’ll be happy with a perfect arc cut from some board as a guide to do the best I can.
