I live in the city of Whangarei in the northern province of the Northern Island of New Zealand. I was born and raised in a farming family and in my teenage years my father introduced me to wood turning on an old overhead flat belt driven lathe which was really an engineering lathe needing quite a few improvised pieces of equipment for wood turning
When I got married I left woodturning alone for about 50 years save for a brief 12 months stint in 1980, now I am retired I have taken this occupation up again with a much more modern lathe and equipment and in the friendliness and active interest of the Northern Woodturning club here in Northland New Zealand
We are blessed to be in the swamp Kauri country where it is possible to obtain our wood at reasonable rates. I enjoy my wood turning, the amount of surprises that arise out of the beautiful grain structure when turning a piece of wood are very satisfying
